Teaching Life Lessons Through the Game of Basketball

The most significant role in my life is that of a parent.  I am the proud father of two beautiful girls.  I have also had a lifetime love affair with the game of basketball.  As my girls grew up, my passion for basketball gave me a new role.  I became a Youth Basketball Parent.  Over the past nine years, I realized that the game of basketball is an excellent way to teach lessons to my daughters that they will be able to use for a lifetime.  I have made numerous errors over those years, eventually leading to my oldest daughter giving up the game.  I have also done a lot of things well.  My youngest daughter was recently recognized as the 3rd rated player in the class of 2023 by prepgirlshoops.com in Wisconsin.  I have decided to create this blog to share the lessons that I have learned about being a Basketball Dad.

My Basketball Career

I did want to share my basketball journey briefly.  I started playing for my Middle School team, and I was not very good.  I was about 5’9” and overweight.  I had not worked very hard on my game at that point.  Once I finished 8th grade, I grew 5 inches over the summer and started to work diligently on my game.  I made the varsity squad my sophomore year and made an impact during my junior and senior years.  I finished my high school career with 987 points and 582 rebounds.  This earned me the attention of Coach Knapton at Beloit College, where I played three seasons as a part-time player.  Once I got married and had children, I became a youth coach for nine years.  After that experience, I focused on chasing my daughters across the country, watching them play club sports.

What is the Blog Going to Focus On?

My experiences do not make me an expert in basketball or life; however, I have a lot of valuable information to share.  Also, I have made numerous contacts in the basketball world.  I intend to tap into these contacts to allow my readers to benefit from their knowledge.  My blog will focus on the following topics.

  1. Basketball Skill Development
  2. Development of the Mental Game
  3. Being a Club Team Parent
  4. College Recruiting
  5. Basketball Travel — Hotels and Restaurants
  6. Interviews with Basketball Coaches, Trainers, and Parents
  7. Basketball Parent Reviews
