There is no doubt that today’s basketball is focused on the 3-point shot. Numerical studies have shown that offenses that are shooting an increasing percentage of 3-point shots. “Simply put, if you’re scoring 3-pointers, you don’t have to make as many baskets or have a tremendous shooting percentage to score. To score 12 points with regular field goals, for example, you need to make six shots; to score 12 points with 3-point field goals, you must make four shots. Essentially you have to make one-third less 3-pointers compared to 2-pointers.” ((Unleashing the power of the 3-pointers | Winning Hoops. https://winninghoops.com/play/unleashing-the-power-of-a-proven-3-point-shot-attack/))
As the 3-point shot dominates the game, I would like to make the case that, in addition to teaching your child to be a deadly 3-point shooter, I would invest the time to teach them to play and score with their backs to the basket. I would recommend this even if your child plays the guard or forward positions.
My daughter plays shooting guard on her club basketball team, but I have created drills that allowed her to develop the footwork to score consistently on the interior. Without a doubt, this skill has garnered her more playing time since she becomes a matchup problem for the other team. If they put a tall girl on her, they have difficultly guarding her on the perimeter. If they put a smaller guard on her, they cannot defend her in the post ((WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Maldonado blossoming with Lady …. https://www.oaoa.com/sports/local/college/odessa_college/article_cda794fc-7e59-11e3-a55a-0019bb30f31a.html)). I can tell you that several colleges have been interested in her precisely because of her inside-out game.
Once the footwork is mastered, your child should be able to score on any size player. I have placed some links below showing my 5’10” daughter scoring on a 6’3″ defender and another showing a great fake.
5 Key Moves to Work On
There are five moves that we consistently work on in the hopes that they become second nature when she gets to a game.
- Power Drop Step
- Fake Baseline Turnaround Jump Shot
- Fake Middle Right Hand Hook Shot
- Fake Baseline Left Hand Hook Shot
- Up and Under
There are plenty of new videos that you can find online to find additional moves or drills to work on with your child. You won’t be sorry if you spend your time working with your daughter to develop some strong post moves ((You Won’t be Sorry if You Come Visit Vancouver Island. http://amazingvancouverisland.com/2013/07/you-wont-be-sorry-if-you-come-visit-vancouver-island/)).
